I am a psychodynamically trained psychotherapist. This means that I help people identify and
understand the conflicts that may be causing them difficulties. I attempt to understand people not only
in the context of their current situation and family history, but on the basis of their cultural and social
contexts as well. I am also trained in family therapy, and I use this method when appropriate, usually
when parents seek treatment for their child. I am bilingual (English/Spanish), with seven years of
experience providing psychotherapy in Spanish. (Yo soy licenciado en psiclogìa, bilingüe
ingles/Español.) In the first few sessions I will attempt to assess your needs, and together we will try
to identify your core issues. I will then explain to you how I think our work should proceed. This
process will help you decide whether you feel comfortable working with me.
I work with adults and adolescents with a wide range of emotional and interpersonal issues. In
other cases, I help people deal with relatively minor problems of living. I have extensive experience in
helping people with anxiety disorders and depression, which are the two most common reasons
Americans enter psychotherapy. In my opinion, when helping people overcome anxiety it is essential
that, in addition to psychodynamic interventions, we do some work around countering negative self-
talk and catastrophic interpretations of anxiety symptoms. Other issues I work well with include low
self-esteem (which underlies many of the problems leading people to seek psychotherapy), reducing
stress, problems at work and at school, loss and grieving, and problems in intimate relationships. In
our work together, I will attempt to create the type of treatment that will help you achieve your goals in
    the shortest possible time.

    Location, Fees, and Hours
I’m in my North Oakland office (close to the Berkeley border) on Mondays, Tuesdays, and
Thursdays, and in my Hayward office on Wednesdays and Fridays. Please see the OFFICES page
for directions and maps. My fee is comparable to other Bay Area psychologists. I will be happy to
discuss the fee when I speak with you. In some cases, I might be able to reduce the fee on the basis
of your income. I accept some insurance plans, such as Blue Cross, Aetna, and Victims of Crime. If
you like, we could schedule an initial 30-minute consultation at no charge to help you decide if you
would like to work with me.

    To Make an Appointment
Please call me at (510) 295-5490 for an initial phone consultation. I will try understand the
issues that are causing you (or someone you care about) difficulty, and I would be happy to answer
any questions you might have. If your issues fall within my area of training and expertise, we could
set up an appointment. If not, I would be happy to help you locate other clinicians who might better
suite your needs. If you prefer, feel free to e-mail me.

    About Me
I have lived in the San Francisco Bay Area over 20 years, after moving here from Southern
California. I did my undergraduate work at the University of California, Berkeley. I earned a masters
degree in Social/Clinical Psychology from New College of California in 1994. I then entered the
California School of Professional Psychology/Alameda (now in San Francisco), receiving a Clinical
Psychology doctoral degree (Psy.D.) in 2000. I earned my psychologist license (PSY 18905) from
the State of California in February, 2003. I have over nine years of experience performing individual
and family psychotherapy, including seven years as a staff psychologist at a community mental
health clinic. I am a member of the American Psychological Association, and the Alameda County
Psychological Association. I am the author of two books (see BOOKS), and numerous articles
appearing in peer-reviewed psychology and psychiatry journals (see PUBLICATIONS). In the
majority of my writings I critically analyze currently popular theories claiming substantial genetic
influences on psychological traits and psychiatric disorders. I have worked with people and
organizations developing alternatives to currently ascendant models in psychology and psychiatry
stressing diagnostic labels, biological and genetic explanations, and medication. I was selected to
be included in the 2007 edition of Marquis Who's Who ®, the leading biographical reference
    publisher.
